New Law Allows Private Employers to Give Preference to Veterans

A new law recently passed by the Michigan State Legislature, will allow private employers to give preference to veterans of the United States Armed Forces when making hiring decisions.

Under the new law, interested employers must adopt a veterans’ preference policy in writing, and the policy must be applied uniformly to employment decisions, promotion of veterans, or retention of veterans when reducing the workforce.

To be eligible to receive preference under this type of policy, an individual must have served in one of the United States Armed Forces, including in the Reserves or National Guard components, and not have been subject to a dishonorable discharge.

For more information see the Michigan Private Employer’s Veterans’ Preference Policy Act (Public Act 508 of 2014). If you have questions regarding the implementation of this type of policy in your business, you should consult with legal counsel.
