Governor Snyder recently signed a bill into law that will allow landlords to send eviction notices to tenants via email or social media. The new law requires landlords to first get consent from the tenant to receive eviction notices electronically, and the landlord cannot refuse to lease to a tenant because they refuse to agree to electronic notification.
Proponents of the new law state that the legislation reflects the changing behaviors of tenants and the increasing use of email over postal mail. Opponents of the new law, including the State Bar of Michigan, state that email is an unreliable legal notification method for eviction notices. These opponents cite to concerns about frequent changes in email addresses, spam filters and unreliable Internet access.
