Demorest Law Firm, PLLC, is happy to announce that we have been selected by Michigan Lawyers Weekly for inclusion in its 2026 Family-Led Law Firms special feature. This marks the third consecutive year our firm has received this recognition. The consistency reflects who we are as a legal team and how we have chosen to build this practice over more than two decades of serving businesses and individuals in Michigan, across the U.S., and internationally.
Honored by Michigan Lawyers Weekly
Michigan Lawyers Weekly is a well-established statewide publication serving Michigan’s legal community, and its special features carry real weight among practitioners and clients alike. Inclusion in the Family-Led Law Firms section reflects a distinction in how a practice is structured and how it operates. For us, it is recognition of something we live every day.
About Demorest Law Firm, PLLC
The firm’s family structure runs deep. Founder and Managing Member Mark Demorest launched the practice in September 1998 after years of experience at a large Detroit firm. His daughter, Melissa Demorest LeDuc, joined the firm after graduating from Wayne State University Law School and has been practicing alongside her father for close to twenty years now. Mark’s son-in-law, Michael Hayes, rounds out the family contingent, working out of our Northern Michigan office in Traverse City and handling business transactions, real estate law, and litigation for clients in that region. Our talented team of attorneys and staff bring dedication to every matter our office handles.
From the beginning, the firm has been rooted in a straightforward philosophy: understand what clients need, then provide solutions efficiently and well. Over the years, that commitment has grown into a full-service practice covering business law and transactions, real estate, litigation, employment law, hospitality law, condemnation, and more. We serve as outside general counsel to many small and mid-sized businesses throughout the region, and we take that responsibility seriously. Clients do not come to us for generic answers. They come because they want experienced attorneys who understand business law, not just the statutes.
Why Does a Family-Led Firm Matter to Clients?
When a firm is built around family, accountability runs deep. There is no hiding behind institutional bureaucracy. Clients work with experienced attorneys who have a personal stake in the reputation of every case we handle. Mark has been practicing in the Detroit area since 1983. Melissa brings close to two decades of experience in business formation, mergers and acquisitions, and estate planning. Mike handles complex business and real estate matters for clients across Northern Michigan. Each of them carries the firm’s name in a way that goes beyond a paycheck.
Our lawyers have represented many of our business clients for years, some well over a decade. That kind of continuity makes a difference to clients who are navigating a complicated acquisition, a real estate dispute, or a sensitive employment situation. The law provides clear answers in theory, but real-world application often requires judgment calls, and judgment gets better with time and context. We know our clients’ businesses.
Three Years Running: What Consistency Looks Like
Receiving this honor once is gratifying. Receiving it three years in a row says the qualities that earned the recognition in the first place have held. We are not coasting on past acknowledgment.
We are also proud members of the International Society of Primerus Law Firms, a global network of independent, top-rated firms. That affiliation reflects another layer of our commitment to quality. It means clients who need legal support beyond Michigan’s borders can access trusted referrals through a vetted network. For businesses operating across state lines, that connection can matter.
To our clients, past and present, thank you. This recognition belongs to you as much as it does to us. You trusted us with your businesses, your transactions, your disputes, and your goals. We do not take that lightly. And to the Michigan Lawyers Weekly, thank you for continuing to shine a light on firms that are doing things a little differently.
