What Is The New Statutory Limit For Small Claims Court?

As we previously mentioned, Governor Snyder recently signed legislation increasing the statutory maximum for filing a claim in small claims court. As of September 1, 2012, that new limit is in place. The new statutory maximum amount in controversy is now $5,000, up from $3,000. Remember, in order to proceed in small claims court, the consent of both parties is needed. If one party does not want the case to proceed in small claims court, then that party can have the action removed to the district courts.
